In this video, I compare shop bought tulips with home grown varieties. Is it worth putting in the effort to grow your own tulips, or are store-bought ones just as good? It’s that time of year again and the tulips are out and what better thing to do when you’re doing your weekly shop than grab a bunch of tulips from the supermarket. It adds a pop of colour to your house and brings me, personally, great joy just looking at a vase of tulips.
And up until this year I thought that was fantastic. Great value, beautiful flowers. What could be any better let me show you.

So I bought these two lips yesterday at the supermarket 12 flowers for a fiver (five pounds). Bargain!
You can’t really go wrong. They are so bright and cheerful.
I wouldn’t necessarily choose the purple ones but nevertheless, they are good value.
Until I’ve grown my own tulips and this is the difference.
12 flowers for £5, although the thought of what I was doing went into it last September.
So I bought the bulbs and planted them in November. But I just couldn’t believe how different they were.
Okay, my bulbs were my choices of colour, so they’re ones that I picked, but even the size of the flower
is different. You know, the the largest one in the shop bought one equals the smallest one of my
home grown flowers. And this is just what I’ve got ready now.
Let me show you what’s still in the garden to come.
I’ve started harvesting these last week and there’s probably a good month’s worth of flowers still to go.
Now okay, they may all flower at once and I may have gone a bit overboard, but all you need is a small patch. Each variety of tulips is about 20 bulbs so it doesn’t take much space.
To plant a bouquet given that the supermarket bouquet was 12 flowers then each different variety that you’re looking at there is more than 12 flowers. So you can easily find some space to plant12 bulbs and give yourself a bouquet next spring of flowers that you actually like.
You can even plant them in a tub or a pot.
With a bit of juzzing you can make them look even more special.
Go on treat yourself. Have a look through the bulb catalogs in August and compose your own bouquet.
The biggest problem will be knowing when to stop!
