This was THE plant to have at the Tatton Flower show this year (2023). One popular variety is the sweet thalictrum (Thalictrum dipterocarpum), which was highly sought after at the Tatton Flower Show. This stunning plant showcases clusters of delicate mauve flowers with vibrant yellow anthers, arranged in loose sprays. It looks great in the border and floral arrangements.
What is thalictrum
Thalictrum, commonly known as Meadow Rue, is a genus of flowering perennial plants that belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. One popular variety is the sweet thalictrum (Thalictrum dipterocarpum), has tiny mauve flowers with yellow anthers produced in loose sprays. Not only does it add beauty to borders and floral arrangements, but it also features attractive glaucous leaves that are intricately divided.
When it comes to growing sweet thalictrum, it thrives in well-drained soil and prefers a sunny or partially shaded location. This plant typically reaches a moderate size, with an average height ranging from 1 – 1.5m and spread of 0.1 – 05m.
To successfully cultivate sweet thalictrum, ensure that the soil is rich in organic matter and maintains a moist, but not waterlogged, consistency.
In terms of maintenance, sweet thalictrum generally does not require extensive pruning. However, removing spent flowers can encourage continuous blooming and prevent self-seeding in the garden.

How to grow Thalictrum dipterocarpum:
- Sow indoors. Sow onto moist well-drained seed compost. Just cover the seed with vermiculite or soil. Keep soil moist but not wet at all times.
- Transplant when large enough to handle to 8cm pots.
- Gradually acclimatise and plant out after 10-15 days.
